With his involvement in revamping the genre to incorporate love lyrics, poppy guitar licks, and the incorporation of new instruments like the piano and saxophone in the early 1990s, he is considered as one of the pioneers of modern Bachata.
He is also known by the nickname El Bachat, which he adopted when he was younger. Santos is not only one of the most well-known figures in bachata music, but he has also served as an inspiration to numerous bachata musicians and singers, including Romeo and Lenny Santos.
With Aventura and Romeo, he has performed a number of tracks. Santos was born in the Monte Cristi province’s Clavellinas, Las Matas de Santa Cruz, in 1967. He was born into a poor family and grew up in a small house on a farm. His father worked a slew of pointless jobs for little to nothing, and the family would go hungry owing to a lack of funds.
Santos began playing guitar for fellow bachatero Luis Vargas in the early 1990s, only to abandon the ensemble and sustain a public dispute with Vargas. Raulin Rodriguez started playing guitar with Antony. Although Blas Durán and Luis were the first bachateros to use electric guitars, Anthony was the one who defined the sound of modern bachata.
Using an Alvarez 5084N guitar with a humbucker in the soundhole and an Ibanez PT4 pedal, he achieved this. He is also credited with using Yamaha APX guitars in bachata. Santos’ “Voy pa’llá” became the first rural bachatero hit. Since the raunchy style of bachata had become more socially acceptable, Santos quickly became the genre’s prominent musician, helping to mainstream bachata. El Mayimbe de la Bachata, as Fernando Villalona had that moniker before Santos.
